Volunteer

Our mission is to support young people in building safe and healthy communities through the creation of art. A Cherry Pit Volunteer is integral to fulfilling this mission; by answering questions, sharing your artistic knowledge, and building relationships, you are helping to build safe and healthy communities.


Responsibilities 

  • Build relationships with youth;

  • Answer inquiries from youth Provide (supports in the city, referrals, etc.);

  • Provide accurate information and ask for clarification, when needed;

  • Provide artistic direction when asked;

  • Clean up at end of shift;

  • Write up contact notes, when required;

  • Maintain confidentiality;

  • Be informed on The Cherry Pit programs (ask questions if you don’t know); and

  • Work as part of a team with Staff & Volunteers.

Time Requirement 

  • We generally require a 1 (one) year commitment

  • Hours per month vary, but a minimum of 4 hours per month is appreciated

  • These can also be discussed and altered, as required by The Cherry Pit, or Volunteer

Skills and Qualifications

  • Experience in the creation of art (tell us more!)

  • Demonstrated level of literacy and communication skills sufficient for job responsibilities

  • An open, accepting, and non-judgmental attitude with an ability to build rapport with community members and staff/organizers 

  • Demonstrated leadership, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skill

  • Demonstrated understanding of the addictions field

  • Experience working with individuals with complex needs (i.e., dual diagnoses, chronic homelessness, physical health concerns, etc)

  • Knowledge of referrals resources and health services available for vulnerable populations

  • Current Vulnerable Sector Police Information Check

  • Experience working with people with complex life circumstances associated with substance-related disorders, mental health issues, mobility issues and homelessness

  • Basic understanding of recovery, client-centered care, trauma-informed care, and harm reduction principles based on dignity, hope and healing as individuals move forward towards improved health and well-being
